Jaeyoung Kim
PhD Candidate, Political Science
McGill University
Jaeyoung Kim is a Ph.D. Candidate in Political Science at McGill University, where he studies international security, international order, and historical IR with a regional focus on East Asia.
His dissertation, The Rise and Fall of Status-Seekers: Commitment, Strategy, and International Political Change in East Asia, advances a theory of status ascent grounded in East Asian history to explain why some status-seeking states rise while others fail to do so. In this dissertation, he argues that when the established international order undergoes a transition, the rise and fall of status-seekers depend on (1) the type of strategies they choose and (2) the type of international political change they encounter.
This project is funded by the ISA Dissertation Completion Fellowship, the FRQSC Doctoral Research Fellowship, and the Lemieux Family Fellowship.
Prior to coming to McGill, he received B.A. in Political Science and M.A. in International Relations from Seoul National University.
